The City Center District Management Corporation (CCDMC) is bringing Birmingham a stunning and smart makeover. The reinvention of 20th Street, which spans from the railroad tracks to Linn Park, is currently in the final phase. The project began on October 11, 2021, and should be finished in time for the start of the World Games on July 7, 2022.
The New Birmingham Green
When the project is complete Birmingham residents can expect 20th Street to resemble elements of Railroad Park and Rotary Trail. The new and improved Birmingham Green will be more… green. Alabama-native plants will be featured along the sidewalks. Cafe-style public seating will also be a new and inviting addition to 20th Street. Also, the bike and flex lanes will be expanded to make 20th Street a safer environment for outdoor activities, and even for picking up food at the numerous restaurants along the street. The project will showcase public art as well. With all of these renovations, 20th Street is sure to be more bustling and beautiful than ever.
Progress
The four phases of this project were segmented into 50-day stages. The first phase began on October 11, 2021, and ended on December 17, 2021. During the first phase, the focus was on the northbound lane of 20th Street from 3rd Avenue North to Linn Park. Phase 2, which focused on the southbound lane of 20th Street from Linn Park to 3rd Avenue North, began on December 18, 2021, and ended on February 2, 2022. From February 3 to March 11, construction was done on the southbound lane of 20th Street from 3rd Avenue North to Morris Avenue. Now the project is in Phase 4, which began on March 12. Lane painting has also begun. The final phase will finish the northbound lane and sidewalk of 20th Street from Morris Avenue to 3rd Avenue North. After the construction is complete planters, flowers, and furniture will be added as the final touches. Overall, this project has Adam’s Design Associates’ stamp of approval. We are excited to see the completion of this project come to fruition over the upcoming months as Birmingham prepares for the 2022 World Games.
